About

Maureen Seltzer lives in Wake Forest N.C. with her husband Neal. After her 4 children had grown up she pursued her art not only her art but all of the arts feverishly. She has served on the local art board to help promote the arts in general as well as the studio tour for the visual arts in Wake Forest. She has just stepped down after a two year term as Member at Large with the Carolina Mixed Media Guild. Enjoying being around people she set her first studio up in the window of a local antique shop. From this location she would sit and paint sharing both her paintings and her knowledge with others. Painfully out growing her first studio she was ask to be the Resident Artist for The North Carolina Store on the same downtown street in her small town. Maureen found that she liked sharing her knowledge so much that she began to step out teaching children’s art classes and has built that end of her business up to the point that she is a much sought after teacher in the town and the surrounding towns. She also teaches adult workshops in Mono printing at her present studio which was a dream the she held in her heart for quite some time. Working with the local coffee shop she helped to set up studio space as well as gallery space for eight artist above the coffee shop called The Artist Loft. While managing The Loft she has curated two state wide juried art shows for charity as well as a group show for The Mixed Media Guild . Keeping with her love for art she was asked to be a part of The Meet The Artist Program at all of her regional library’s. Demonstrating Mono printing not once but twice. Maureen has also been ask to be a Contributing Artist on the Gel Press Web Site as well as being asked to be a guest on The Jerry’s Artarama Live broadcast demonstrating the tools used in Mono Printing. Her artwork has been in many shows throughout the Carolina’s and Virginia

Artist Statement
When looking at my collage art from far away it looks like just a painting but on closer observation one would be able to pick out text from an old book page or a music note or two and maybe the corner of a map of some far away place. How is this done? Each collage allows me to explore both the abstract and realism in one piece of art . Once the idea is planted in my head it is quickly under-painting in acrylic paint onto the canvas acting as a road map for the collage. When complete it is on to mono printing the papers.
Armed with old book pages, sheet music , or maps, the challenge is to make wildly abstract papers in all the shades and tones needed for that particular piece. I often find my mind wondering about the people that once owned the papers and in some strange way feel like this allows me to take them on my artistic journey as well as saving them from the trash pile.

Having mono printed papers ready the next part of this process begins. Tearing and gluing the papers down much like a painter lays a brushstroke using archival Matt medium. Did you know that there is something very Zen about ripping paper and then gluing it down? I love watching these abstract papers turn into a very realistic piece of art.

When this is finished each piece of art has 3 coats of U.V. varnish applied to seal it. There is no paint added after the paper is placed onto the canvas .
